Denmark shits down air traffic after spotting unidentified drones
(MENAFN) According to reports, Denmark temporarily halted flights at Aalborg Airport on Wednesday after multiple unidentified “drones” were spotted near the runway. The sightings mark the latest in a series of unexplained incidents affecting sites that include facilities hosting Denmark’s F-16 and newly arrived F-35 fighter jets.
Northern Jutland police stated that “more than one drone” was seen hovering over Aalborg with their lights on around 9:44 p.m. local time. Additional sightings were reported at airports in Esbjerg, Sonderborg, and Skrydstrup, home to the country’s F-16 and F-35 fleets.
Despite hours of surveillance and support from the Danish armed forces, authorities were unable to identify the drones, their operators, or their purpose. “It is too early to say what the goal of the drones is and who is the actor behind,” a police official told reporters, adding that attempts would be made to bring them down “if possible.” Ultimately, the drones disappeared without being intercepted.
The episode follows closely on the heels of a four-hour flight suspension at Copenhagen Airport, the busiest in the Nordic region, caused by similar drone activity. Officials described that incident as the most serious “attack” on Danish infrastructure to date, though the perpetrator was never identified.
Meanwhile, Oslo Airport in Norway was briefly closed on the same night due to a suspected drone sighting, fueling speculation that the incidents could be part of a wider, unconnected wave of activity often attributed to Moscow. Russia’s ambassador in Copenhagen dismissed such claims as “ungrounded.”
