Jaishankar Urges Greater Unity Among Global South

(MENAFN) The concept of multilateralism is facing significant challenges, and the nations of the Global South must collaborate more closely to address this, Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar stated on Tuesday.

Speaking at the High Level Meeting of Like-Minded Global South Countries, held on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, Jaishankar emphasized the need for a coordinated effort to reform international institutions, including the UN.

“The very concept of multilateralism is under attack,” the Indian foreign minister remarked. “International organizations are being rendered ineffective or starved of resources. The building blocks of the contemporary order are starting to come apart. And the cost of delaying much needed reforms is today starkly visible.”

He further noted that, given the current situation, “it is natural that the Global South turns to multilateralism for solutions.”

Jaishankar has previously expressed similar worries, highlighting that there are “strong sentiments” in the Global South about the inequities of the present international system.

During the New York meeting, the Indian foreign minister presented a structured strategy for the Global South—including alliances like BRICS+—to actively participate in addressing global challenges.
