Real Madrid Outperforms Espanyol to Extend La Liga Lead

(MENAFN) Real Madrid extended their flawless start to the La Liga season, securing a comfortable 2-0 victory over Espanyol at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday. Espanyol, entering the match unbeaten and sitting third in the table, failed to threaten as Eder Militao opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a powerful long-range strike. Kylian Mbappe sealed the win early in the second half with a precise finish, doubling Madrid’s lead in the 47th minute.

In other key matches, Villarreal overturned a deficit to edge Osasuna 2-1 despite playing with 11 men less after Valentin Rosier’s double yellow card dismissal in the 39th minute. Osasuna's Ante Budimir converted a penalty in the 50th minute to put his side ahead, but Georges Mikautaze equalized in the 68th minute. Villarreal’s winner came five minutes from time, courtesy of a fortunate deflection off Pape Gueye.

Valencia clinched a 2-0 home victory against Athletic Bilbao, capitalizing on a pivotal moment when Dani Vivian was controversially sent off in the 60th minute. Baptiste Santamaria gave Valencia the lead in the 72nd minute, followed by Hugo Duro’s injury-time strike to secure the win.

Sevilla claimed a 2-1 away win at Alaves, with goals from Ruben Vargas and Alexis Sanchez, while Carlos Vicente converted a penalty for the hosts.

Girona’s woes deepened after a heavy 4-0 defeat at home to Levante. The visitors scored through Etta Eyong, Carlos Alvarez, Ivan Romero, and Goduine Koyalipou. Girona’s situation worsened with Axel Witsel’s early red card after 30 minutes and Victor Reis’s dismissal just after halftime, forcing them to play nearly the entire second half with nine men.

Friday’s opener saw Betis triumph 3-1 over Real Sociedad, who remain without a victory this season. Cucho Hernandez put Betis ahead early, and although Brais Mendez equalized, a costly error by Sociedad’s goalkeeper Alex Remiro allowed Betis to regain the lead in the 47th minute. Pablo Fornals then sealed the result with a goal over 20 minutes from time.
