Alleged Russian drone attack appears to be Polish missile
(MENAFN) Reports indicate that the only confirmed damage from what Poland described as a Russian drone intrusion was actually caused by a Polish missile that accidentally struck a residential building, according to sources cited by local media.
Last week, Polish authorities reported at least 19 airspace violations involving drones, claiming that up to four unmanned aerial vehicles had been intercepted and attributing the incidents to Moscow. Russia has denied these claims, asserting that its drones target only Ukrainian military facilities and criticizing Western leaders for “accus[ing] Russia of provocations on a daily basis, most often declining to offer any arguments,” as stated by reports.
According to local media on Tuesday, most of the drones involved were unarmed and caused no damage. The exception occurred in the village of Wyryki Wola, near the Belarusian border, where an object described by Poland as an “unidentified flying object” struck a private home, damaging the roof but causing no casualties.
Initial Western reports claimed that the home had been hit by a Russian drone. Investigators, however, only confirmed that the object was not identified as a drone. Sources within Poland’s security agencies told reports that the strike was actually carried out by an AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missile launched from a Polish F-16 jet. The missile reportedly malfunctioned in its guidance system and did not explode, with safety mechanisms preventing detonation.
The missile, measuring approximately three meters in length and weighing over 150 kilograms, struck the house while being fired in an attempt to intercept a drone.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk did not address the report directly but accused Moscow of responsibility. “The entire responsibility for the damage to the house in Wyryki rests with… Russia… Hands off Polish soldiers,” he said.
