Kirk’s Killing: Suspect Confession Aimed to Protect Real Shooter

(MENAFN) A man present during the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk has confessed to falsely claiming responsibility to mislead authorities and aid the actual gunman’s escape, the Utah County Sheriff’s Office revealed. George Zinn now faces obstruction of justice charges.

Kirk was shot dead while addressing students at Utah Valley University on September 10. The suspected shooter, Tyler Robinson, was captured Friday after his father identified him from surveillance footage and convinced him to surrender.

According to a Tuesday statement by the Utah County Sheriff’s Office, shortly after the attack, Zinn “began yelling that he had shot Charlie Kirk.” Police detained him, but he required hospitalization due to a “medical issue.” While receiving treatment, Zinn admitted to hospital staff that his claim was false and intended to “hinder Law Enforcement’s response.”

Zinn later confirmed to police that his false confession was meant to “allow the actual suspect to flee.” The sheriff’s office stressed, “At this time, there is no information that George Zinn actually colluded with the shooter.”

On Tuesday, Robinson was formally charged with aggravated murder. Utah Governor Spencer Cox announced the state will pursue the death penalty for the 22-year-old.

Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray also shared that, per Robinson’s mother, the suspect’s political views shifted significantly over the past year toward progressive stances, especially on gay and transgender rights. Gray noted Robinson is in a romantic relationship with his roommate, who is undergoing gender transition.

Kirk, aged 31, was widely known as the co-founder of Turning Point USA, a leading conservative activist group, and a vocal supporter of President Donald Trump.
