Nepal PM Resigns As Protests Spread, Parliament Attacked

NEW DELHI, Sept 9 (KUNA) -- Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned from his post on Tuesday as deadly protests led by youth against banning social media platforms spread to more areas, killing at least 19 people and injuring more than 500 others.
The Himalayan Times reported quoting official sources that Oli wrote to President Ramchandra Paudel tendering his resignation.
"Considering the extraordinary situation prevailing in the country and in order to facilitate further efforts toward a constitutional political solution and problem resolution, I hereby resign from the office of Prime Minister, effective immediately, under Article 77(1)a of the Constitution," his letter said.
This came amid reports of protests against the government decision to ban several social media platforms spread to more areas despite curfew imposed to restrict movements of the people.
President Paudel and the Nepalese Army appealed to the people to maintain calm and find a solution through dialogue and peaceful means amid reports that the protesters set on fire and vandalised Singha Durbar, the Federal Parliament, the Supreme Court, the Special Court, district courts, office of the Attorney General apart from several offices of political parties, revenue offices, media reports said.
Meanwhile, Yeti Airlines announced cancellation of all scheduled flights for today. The airlines cited nationwide curfews and security concerns in the Kathmandu Valley. The Tribhuvan International Airport; the only international gateway in the country, also completely closed its services. (end)
