For the first time, vertical farming has achieved remarkable success in Ghundi, a locality of Jamrud tehsil, Khyber district, turning once low-yielding farmland into a highly profitable venture.

Land that for years produced only limited quantities of wheat and maize is now generating profits worth millions. This transformation is credited to the hard work of local farmer Arshad Khan, guided by the Agriculture Department.

According to officials, farmers including Arshad Khan were selected a year ago under a World Bank-supported initiative. Initially unfamiliar with the concept of vertical farming, Arshad progressed steadily with the guidance and practical training provided by Field Assistant Naveed Khan.

On just one acre of land, Arshad cultivated bitter gourd, pumpkin, and ridge gourd, earning Rs 350,000 in profit so far. In the next two to three months, his income is expected to rise to Rs 1 million. Previously, the same land yielded only a few maunds of wheat or maize, barely covering farming costs.

Arshad Khan said vertical farming has completely changed his life, and he now intends to continue farming solely through this method.“With small land, it has become possible to achieve higher yields and greater profits,” he remarked.

Agriculture experts say this success is not limited to one farmer but represents a new ray of hope and a promising future for all cultivators in Khyber district.
