Activist Warns Israel May Open Fire on Sumud Flotilla
(MENAFN) A Bosnian participant in the Global Sumud Flotilla, which is navigating to challenge the Gaza blockade and deliver relief supplies, cautioned that Israel might attempt to obstruct the flotilla from arriving at its goal, potentially even by employing gunfire.
Boris Vitlacil, who joined the flotilla aboard vessels departing from Sicily after it had embarked from Barcelona on Aug. 31, addressed the matter virtually during a press briefing coordinated by the Sarajevo-based Gaza Movement initiative.
He emphasized that public consciousness in Europe regarding the conditions in Gaza is expanding each day and highlighted that the flotilla has gained backing from across the globe.
Vitlacil remarked that Israel could try to intercept the ships, stating: "Personally, I don’t think they will arrest us, as this would put Israeli forces in a difficult situation. We are talking about more than 50 boats. I believe they will attempt certain measures to prevent us from reaching our target."
He further cautioned that Israeli units might fire on or even sink the ships. If that occurs, "instead of continuing on our route, we would try to rescue our friends," he noted.
Around 20 boats departed from Barcelona late last month as part of the mission, followed by another group leaving Genoa, Italy, earlier this week. A third flotilla was arranged to sail from Tunisia on Wednesday before advancing toward Gaza to defy the tightening blockade.
The campaign unites the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, the Global Gaza Movement, the Sumud Convoy, and Malaysia’s Nusantara Solidarity organization.
