Iran Confirms Support for Lebanon
(MENAFN) Iran’s Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, affirmed on Wednesday that Tehran will continue to support the Lebanese people “under all circumstances.”
His statement was made during an official visit to Beirut, where he arrived at Rafik Hariri International Airport.
According to a news agency, Larijani shared plans to meet with key Lebanese leaders, including President Joseph Aoun, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam.
Larijani underscored Iran’s consistent backing of Lebanon’s national interests. He emphasized solidarity between the two nations by stating: “If the Lebanese people suffer, the Iranian people feel that pain too. We will stand by the people of Lebanon under all circumstances.”
His remarks reflect Tehran’s position amidst increasing political and security pressures in the region.
The Iranian official arrived from Iraq for what was described as a one-day visit, according to a release from the Iranian Embassy in Beirut.
His trip coincides with heightened tensions following Iran’s strong objection to any attempts at disarming Hezbollah.
This stance was declared after the Lebanese government announced intentions to enforce state control over all armed forces.
Conflict along the Israel-Lebanon border initially erupted in October 2023 and escalated dramatically into a large-scale war by September 2024.
The violence claimed the lives of approximately 4,000 individuals, including Hezbollah leader Hasan Nasrallah, and left an estimated 17,000 people wounded.
Although a ceasefire was brokered in November, Israeli forces have continued near-daily military operations in southern Lebanon, citing alleged Hezbollah activities as justification.
Under the terms of the truce, Israel was expected to withdraw completely from the south by January 26.
However, after Tel Aviv’s refusal to comply, the deadline was postponed to February 18. Despite this, Israel still holds five border outposts, maintaining its presence in the area.
