Trump Imposes 25% Tariff On Indian Goods
Trade talks between the U.S. and India have stalled, with both sides unable to reach common ground on a new trade agreement, according to The Indian Express.
The U.S. is demanding duty-free access for American goods in Indian markets, while India insists tariffs on its exports to the U.S. should not exceed 15 percent.
Amid the deadlock, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday, July 29, that his administration will impose a 25 percent tariff on Indian imports.
Speaking to reporters aboard his flight from Scotland to Washington, Trump stated,“[India] will pay 25 percent,” signaling a tougher trade stance toward New Delhi.
He criticized India's trade practices, saying the country had“made more changes to tariffs than almost any other nation,” before warning,“now I'm in charge, and that won't happen anymore.”
Analysts warn the tariff decision could provoke retaliation from India, risking a broader trade conflict that may disrupt economic ties between the two major economies.
Observers note that Trump's move highlights his use of tariffs as leverage in trade negotiations, though critics caution such measures could damage diplomacy and global trade stability.
