Ex-South Korea’s leader is accused of new crimes
(MENAFN) Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol was indicted Saturday on fresh charges related to his controversial imposition of martial law on December 3, 2024, according to Yonhap News Agency.
Prosecutors accuse Yoon of abusing his authority by bypassing Cabinet protocol, retroactively drafting the martial law order, and deleting official government records. These new charges add to the ongoing insurrection trial he is already facing.
Yoon, 64, is currently being held at the Seoul Detention Center in Uiwang. His arrest earlier this month followed a court order, which cited the risk of evidence tampering.
This marks a deepening legal crisis for the former leader, who was briefly released in March after a court overturned a previous arrest made in January. However, in April, he was permanently removed from office after the Constitutional Court upheld his December impeachment by the National Assembly.
Following a snap election in June, newly elected President Lee Jae Myung signed legislation authorizing further investigations into Yoon’s use of martial law, which many lawmakers and civil groups have condemned as unconstitutional and authoritarian.
