Earthquake Hits Indonesia’s Tanimbar Islands


(MENAFN) A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 shook the area surrounding Indonesia’s Tanimbar Islands on Monday, according to both the German Centre for Georesearch (GEOFON) and the US Geological Survey.

Initially, GEOFON recorded the seismic event as having a magnitude of 7 before updating its measurements.

The quake’s point of origin was located 167 kilometers (103 miles) from the city of Tual, in Indonesia’s Maluku province, at an underground depth of 65.7 kilometers (40 miles).

Authorities have not reported any injuries or destruction to infrastructure in the aftermath of the tremor.
