Overloaded Mango Lorry Crash Claims Nine Lives in India
(MENAFN) At least nine people lost their lives and 11 others sustained injuries after a lorry overloaded with mangoes overturned in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, authorities confirmed on Monday.
The fatal incident occurred late Sunday in the Pullampeta area of Annamayya district, located approximately 387 kilometers southwest of Amaravati, the state’s capital.
"The accident took place when the lorry lost control and turned turtle. The lorry was carrying an overload of mangoes of about 40 tons, with 20 workers seated on top of the load," a police official stated.
According to police, the force of the overturn caused crates of mangoes to collapse onto the laborers, killing several and injuring others.
Emergency teams and local residents quickly responded to the scene, launching rescue efforts and transporting the injured to nearby hospitals.
While the precise cause of the accident remains under investigation, authorities believe the excessive load played a critical role. However, the truck driver, who survived, told police he lost control while attempting to avoid an oncoming vehicle.
