Russia, São Tomé, Príncipe discuss boosting bilateral ties

(MENAFN) Russia and the island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe have recently engaged in discussions aimed at boosting their bilateral relations, particularly in military and agricultural sectors, according to reports from the Russian Embassy located in the Central African country.

Last year, the two nations signed an agreement in St. Petersburg intended to create a long-term framework for military collaboration, which includes joint training exercises and counterterrorism efforts. This agreement is designed to remain effective indefinitely.

On Wednesday, Russian Ambassador to Angola and São Tomé and Príncipe, Vladimir Tararov, met with Prime Minister Americo Ramos. The talks, as noted by the embassy, concentrated on “current topics of bilateral cooperation of mutual interest.”

Following the meeting, Tararov told reporters that discussions covered agriculture, military-technical cooperation, and joint research on biodiversity and marine resources. The ambassador also mentioned, “We found an understanding regarding the entry of our [Russian] training ship,” referring to plans for a vessel visit that will coincide with São Tomé’s 50th independence anniversary celebrations on July 12, as well as the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries on August 9.

According to reports, São Tomé’s authorities ratified the agreement last year granting Russia access to its naval port on the Atlantic Ocean. The pact, signed in April 2024, also includes provisions for sharing military education knowledge, engineering support for troops, combating piracy and terrorism, and providing military logistics assistance.

In a broader context, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated last November at the Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi that more African countries are turning to Moscow for security support. Nations such as Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, which have faced prolonged jihadist insurgencies, have ended defense partnerships with France and sought closer ties with Russia for security cooperation. These countries have accused their former colonial ruler of perpetuating conflict under the guise of counterterrorism.
