S. Africa wants to make ninety-day tariff suspension longer
(MENAFN) With the United States’ 90-day tariff suspension set to end on July 9, South Africa’s Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Parks Tau, announced on Tuesday that South Africa, together with other African nations, is pushing for the pause to be extended.
Tau’s comments came after his deputy, Zuko Godlimpi, met last week with Connie Hamilton, the U.S. Assistant Trade Representative for Africa, to discuss urgent trade issues.
The meeting occurred alongside the U.S.-Africa Business Summit in Angola, where South Africa raised concerns about “reciprocal tariffs.” During talks, it was revealed that the U.S. is preparing a "trade-matters template" to guide future discussions with sub-Saharan African countries.
Given the short time remaining before the tariff pause expires and the ongoing negotiations, Tau emphasized the necessity of an extension. He explained, "In this regard, we are of the view that South Africa may need to resubmit its trade and investment proposal in accordance with the new template. It is thus expected that the deadline be shifted."
Tau also noted that the trade template has not yet been shared with African nations and that more time is needed for them to review and respond.
He urged South African industries to remain patient and avoid rushing decisions, assuring that the government will continue exploring all channels to engage with the U.S. government to secure a fair outcome that protects South Africa’s interests in the American market.
