Children Honored In Kyiv For Helping Clear Rubble After Russian Attack

“On June 17, a Russian missile struck a residential building in the Solomianskyi district. In the morning, schoolchildren were already helping victims and city workers. Our children. They organized themselves. They came on their own, wearing goggles, respirators, gloves. Of different ages. The youngest was just 9 years old,” Tkachenko wrote.

He noted that although the children had not slept the night of the attack, they chose to help instead of rest.

“As a father, I bow deeply to each of these children. And I thank their parents, teachers, and everyone who raised such citizens - individuals of the highest integrity. Today, we met in person, and it was a great honor for me to speak with these young but great Kyivans and their families. To thank them personally for such an inspiring example of solidarity and service to the city. This has been the warmest meeting I've had in my time in office,” he emphasized.

The Kyiv City Military Administration presented the children with small gifts and letters of appreciation.

“But true gratitude isn't measured by ceremonies. We can only demonstrate it by setting the same kind of example these children have shown,” Tkachenko said.

He added that the Solomianski Kotyky fund organized tactical medicine training for these brave teens.

“And we will continue involving these young, yet already mature Kyivans in developing a culture of readiness to help,” Tkachenko concluded.

According to Suspilne , Yaroslav Savchenko, who is about to turn 15, is no stranger to helping emergency workers clear rubble after Russian strikes.

“This is the third site I've helped at,” said Yaroslav.“I was walking with friends from our neighborhood. We worked from morning till evening, helping people - carrying things, clearing rubble. The hardest part was moving heavy structures like apartment doors, windows, etc. We took them to a dumpster, and later a tractor came and removed them.”

As reported by Ukrinform, a total of 207 structures were damaged in Kyiv as a result of the massive Russian missile strike on June 17, with 106 of them located in the Solomianskyi district. The bodies of 23 people were found under the rubble of a destroyed apartment building entrance.
