Russia Voices Doubt for Israel, Iran Ceasefire
(MENAFN) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Tuesday indicated that Moscow would support the recently declared ceasefire between Iran and Israel.
The truce was revealed earlier by US President Donald Trump, though Lavrov remained uncertain about the ceasefire's durability.
"As for the announcements that have been coming out of Washington, Israel, and Tehran … it is very difficult for us to make any final conclusions and get a clear picture, because President Trump has announced that peace is forever and ever, there is an agreement," Lavrov remarked during his remarks at the 11th Primakov Readings International Forum, held in Moscow.
Referencing various media accounts, Lavrov noted that the United States had reportedly persuaded Israel to accept the ceasefire, while Qatar played a comparable mediating role with Iran.
He emphasized that Russia would regard such an arrangement positively.
"But after its announcement, there were reports of an exchange of blows between Israel and Iran, so let us not make any hasty conclusions based on fragmentary information. But we are for peace," Lavrov cautioned, alluding to renewed hostilities that occurred even after the ceasefire declaration.
President Trump had announced late Monday that both Israel and Iran had consented to a "Complete" and "Total" ceasefire, bringing an end to "The 12 DAY War."
This brief conflict had begun on June 13, when Israel launched strikes against Iranian nuclear and military targets, prompting missile reprisals from Tehran.
Prior to the truce, the US also carried out airstrikes on three prominent Iranian nuclear installations on Sunday, which led Iran to strike back by targeting a US airbase located in Qatar the following night.
The ceasefire officially commenced at 0400GMT on Tuesday.
Trump appealed to both nations to maintain restraint and not breach the new peace agreement.
