UNIFIL Urges Lebanese Authorities To Ensure Its Mission Proceeds Unhindered

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BEIRUT, June 10 (KUNA) -- The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) on Tuesday condemned the "unacceptable" attacks on its peacekeepers and urged Lebanese authorities to guarantee that its forces can operate "without hindrance or threat."
In a statement, the mission stressed that freedom of movement--enshrined in UN Security Council Resolution 1701--is essential to its independent and impartial mandate, and said any restriction, "whether or not the Lebanese Armed Forces are present," violates that resolution.
The mission reported that a patrol jointly planned with the Lebanese Army was confronted near Hallousiyeh Tahta, southern Lebanon, by civilians who blocked the vehicles, threw stones and struck one peacekeeper; no injuries were recorded.
UNIFIL personnel used non-lethal measures to secure the scene, and the Lebanese Army arrived promptly, restoring calm and allowing the patrol to continue, the statement mentioned.
Earlier today, Lebanon's National News Agency reported that youths in Hallousiyeh Tahta blocked a UNIFIL patrol because it lacked a Lebanese Army presence. (end)
