U.S. Pres. Offers China Tariff Cuts In Exchange For Tiktok Deal

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON, March 27 (KUNA) -- US president Donald Trump said late Wednesday he might lower tariffs on China in exchange for finalizing a deal on the popular app TikTok, as the platform nears its final extension deadline on April 5.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump stated that "China is going to have to play a role in that, possibly in the form of an approval and I think they'll do that."
He also expressed confidence that Beijing would agree to the proposal, suggesting that he would give "a little reduction in tariffs or something to get it done" adding "every point in tariffs is worth more money than TikTok."
Trump reiterated his willingness to extend the deadline if no agreement is reached by next week.
His remarks followed his signing of an executive order on Wednesday imposing a 25 percent tariff on imported cars.
Trump had previously imposed a 10 percent tariff on Chinese imports in February, later raising it by an additional 20 percent earlier this month.
TikTok proposal comes less than two weeks before the deadline, which requires its Chinese-based company, ByteDance to divest from the app's US operations amid national security concerns. (end)
