Student Gets Arrested for Waving Palestinian Flag at World Cup Qualifier
(MENAFN) A Tunisian student was detained after entering a stadium and showing the Palestinian flag during a 2026 World Cup qualifier in Tunis, the country's student union reported on Tuesday.
According to a statement from the General Tunisian Union of Students (UGTE), the student was arrested after removing pro-Israel banners at the Rades Stadium during the football match between Tunisia and Malawi on Monday.
The UGTE further explained that the student raised the Palestinian flag as an act of solidarity with the Palestinian cause.
The union condemned the arrest, calling it "a violation of freedom of expression and the right to take a firm and clear stance regarding national and humanitarian issues."
Additionally, the union expressed its continued support for all demonstrations in favor of the Palestinian cause.
On Monday, Tunisians posted a footage on social media showing a young man storming the stadium, waving the Palestinian flag, and removing a French logo, which was accused of supporting Israel.
There was no instant response from Tunisian authorities regarding what happened.
The country has witnessed numerous demonstrations against Israel’s actions in Gaza, where over 50,100 individuals have died in a violent campaign since October 2023.
