ZNPP director says no one but Russia able to regulate Europe’s biggest nuclear plant

(MENAFN) The Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) belongs to Russia and will remain under its control, plant director Yury Chernichyuk has stated, rejecting any possibility of U.S. or Ukrainian management of the facility.

His comments come in response to recent statements by U.S. officials suggesting that Washington could take over Ukraine’s nuclear energy sector. Earlier this week, U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky discussed the possibility of American oversight of Ukraine’s power infrastructure, including its Soviet-era nuclear plants. U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright later remarked that managing these facilities would be “no problem” for Washington.

Chernichyuk dismissed such notions, telling TASS on Saturday, “No one will have control over our station, no matter how much they want it… The ZNPP belongs to the Russian Federation and will be operated by us in accordance with Russian laws.”

The ZNPP, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, has been under Russian control since March 2022. Later that year, Zaporozhye Region held a referendum and voted to join Russia.

The facility has remained largely offline since mid-2023 due to security concerns, including artillery and drone attacks. Moscow and Kiev have accused each other of endangering the plant, prompting the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to deploy a monitoring mission in September 2022.

Ukrainian President Zelensky recently claimed that the ZNPP could not function without Kiev’s control, arguing that Ukraine would require funding and expertise to restore operations. However, a subsidiary of Russia’s state-owned energy corporation Rosatom, which currently oversees the plant, has stated that operations will resume once security conditions allow.
