US plans to import eggs from Turkey, South Korea

(MENAFN) To deal with a critical egg shortage caused by an avian influenza disease and disruptions in the supply chain, the United States will import hundreds of millions of eggs from Turkey and South Korea, according to reports released by Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins on Friday.

In a remark to reporters at the White House, Rollins stated, “We’ve got Turkey and South Korea importing eggs.”

She also noted, “We are talking in the hundreds of millions of eggs for the short term. (This is) significant enough to help continue to bring the prices down for right now.”

The United States is also negotiating with other nations for additional egg imports.

This decision is part of a five-point plan Rollins introduced at the beginning of March to address the crisis, which resulted in a 15.2% increase in egg prices in January this year—the highest monthly rise since June 2015. Throughout the last five years, egg prices have soared by 230%, the Labor Department reported.

Rollins also stressed the crucial role of biosecurity tactics to curb the spread of avian flu, which has severely affected avian populations for almost two years.
