2024 Deadliest Year For Refugees, Nearly 9,000 Lives Lost: IOM Repor
The IOM has confirmed that at least 8,938 people perished along migration routes this year. The report emphasizes that the most perilous migration routes are in Asia, followed by the Mediterranean Sea and certain paths in Africa.
In addition, IOM's Deputy Secretary-General, Ugochi Daniels, has stated that the increasing number of deaths across migration routes worldwide highlights the urgent need for a comprehensive international response to prevent further human suffering.
In December of the previous year, a Spanish refugee rights organization reported that over 10,000 migrants died attempting to reach Spain by sea. The group highlighted the dire conditions faced by migrants, often leaving their countries due to conflict or extreme poverty.
The report also mentioned that tens of thousands of migrants left West Africa in 2024, heading towards the Canary Islands. The root causes of migration, such as poverty and conflict, continue to drive people to risk their lives in search of a better future.
As the death toll continues to rise, the international community is urged to take immediate action to address the underlying factors of migration, such as poverty and conflict. It is clear that without coordinated global efforts, the tragic loss of lives will persist, and the humanitarian crisis will deepen.
Efforts to improve migration policies, provide safer routes, and tackle the root causes of migration must be prioritized to ensure a more humane and effective approach to addressing the challenges faced by migrants. The continued loss of life on dangerous migration routes demands urgent and decisive action from governments and international organizations.
