Wildfires in South Korea escalate, leaving four dead, hundreds displaced
(MENAFN) Firefighters in South Korea battled raging wildfires in the southeastern area for the fourth straight day on Monday, with authorities deploying dozens of helicopters in a bid to prevent further spread.
The wildfires, which began in Sancheong County and have now reached neighboring Hadong County, have claimed at least four lives, according to government reports.
To combat the blazes, which are centered in South Gyeongsang province, around 250 kilometers (155 miles) southeast of Seoul, approximately 36 helicopters were sent into action on Monday, along with over 2,300 firefighters and soldiers stationed at the scene to safeguard homes and facilities.
The flames, which ignited last Friday in Sancheong, have already caused significant destruction, injuring six people and destroying over 24 buildings, including two Buddhist temples. As the fires spread to Hadong, almost 600 residents have been forced to flee their homes.
As of Monday morning, authorities reported that 70% of the wildfire in Sancheong had been under brought control.
