U.S. Removes Financial Reward for Information on Taliban Leader

(MENAFN) The United States has removed a USD10 million reward previously offered for information beneficial to the capture of Sirajuddin Haqqani, the Taliban-controlled interim Interior Minister, according to an Afghan Interior Ministry representative on Sunday.

Years ago, the US suspected Sirajuddin Haqqani of orchestrating deadly strikes against US forces in Afghanistan as well as the then-Afghan government. In response, they declared a financial incentive for any information that could lead to his detention.

Additionally, the US revoked USD5 million rewards for Abdul Aziz Haqqani and Yahya Haqqani, as confirmed by representative Abdul Matin Qani.

A 2009 press release from the US Department of State described Sirajuddin Haqqani as "a senior leader of the Haqqani terrorist network." It also noted that Haqqani "admitted planning the January 14, 2008 attack against the Serena Hotel in Kabul that killed six people, including American citizen Thor David Hesla," during an interview with a media outlet.

On Thursday, Adam Boehler, the US Leader Donald Trump’s Hostage Affairs envoy, met with the Taliban-led interim Foreign Minister Maulvi Amir Khan Muttaqi in Afghanistan.

In a related development, the Taliban released George Glezmann, an American national and Delta Airlines mechanic, who had been detained for over two years.
