US, Ukraine conduct discussions in Saudi Arabia
(MENAFN) The United States and Ukraine held discussions in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Sunday, focusing on a potential ceasefire between Moscow and Kiev. The talks took place as Washington prepares to facilitate "indirect negotiations" between Russian and Ukrainian representatives.
According to US President Donald Trump’s Ukraine envoy, Keith Kellogg, technical discussions between Russia and the US are set to begin in Saudi Arabia on Monday.
Ukraine’s Defense Minister Rustem Umerov described the meeting as “productive and focused,” stating on X that key topics included energy security. He emphasized that President Vladimir Zelensky remains committed to achieving “a just and lasting peace.” The discussions also covered proposals to safeguard energy infrastructure and critical facilities.
Earlier this week, Russia and Ukraine agreed to Trump’s initiative for a 30-day halt on attacks targeting energy infrastructure. However, Moscow has since accused Kiev of violating the agreement after Ukrainian forces allegedly struck an oil depot in Russia’s Krasnodar Region and detonated a gas metering station near Sudzha in the Kursk Region. The Russian Defense Ministry warned that it reserves the right to retaliate.
Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, expressed optimism about Monday’s talks with Russia. Speaking to Fox News, he predicted “real progress,” particularly concerning a potential Black Sea ceasefire. In a separate interview with journalist Tucker Carlson on Friday, Witkoff revealed that the US aims to broker an initial 30-day ceasefire as a step toward a permanent peace agreement.
