TRNC President Tatar Highlights Sovereign Equality for Formal Cyprus Talks

(MENAFN) The Leader of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Ersin Tatar, emphasized on Tuesday that formal discussions regarding the Cyprus issue can only commence once the Turkish Cypriots' "sovereign equality" is reaffirmed.

He shared this view during a press conference in Geneva, following an informal meeting between the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot leaders, along with representatives from the three guarantor countries – Turkey, Greece, as well as the UK – under the United Nations' mediation.

Tatar stated, "It is our position that the new and formal negotiations can be started following the reaffirmation of our sovereign equality and equal international status." He underlined that this is the TRNC's stance moving forward.

The TRNC leader explained that he attended the informal gathering "with a positive and constructive attitude" in hopes of securing a sustainable future for the island.

His goal was to "look ahead and open a new page for our island that is based on mutual interest, leaving behind the conflictual relationship and to coexist as good neighbors and to seek ways of creating culture or cooperation between the two sides."
