Recent Canadian Premier targets Trump

(MENAFN) Canada’s newly sworn-in Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has firmly dismissed US President Donald Trump’s repeated suggestions that Canada should become America’s 51st state.

Speaking outside Rideau Hall on Friday after taking office, Carney rejected the idea of annexation outright. “We will never, ever, in any way, shape, or form, be part of the United States,” he declared.

His comments came in response to Trump’s remarks a day earlier, in which the US president claimed that “Canada only works as a state” and defended his recent tariffs on Canadian imports, arguing that Washington spends $200 billion annually to “subsidize” Ottawa.

Carney countered Trump’s claims, asserting that Canada is a “fundamentally different nation” with its own unique identity and economy. He emphasized the importance of diversifying trade partners to reduce reliance on the US and pledged to maintain Canada’s retaliatory tariffs against American goods until Washington shows “respect.”

“We didn’t ask for this fight, but Canadians are always ready when someone else drops the gloves,” Carney stated, vowing that “Canada will win.”

The incoming prime minister’s firm stance follows his recent election as leader of Canada’s ruling Liberal Party after Justin Trudeau resigned in January amid declining approval ratings.

Carney’s pushback comes as Trump has also revived discussions of US annexation of Greenland and has expressed interest in reasserting American control over the Panama Canal.
