New Delhi Railway Station Stampede Case Reaches Supreme Court, PIL Seeks Guidelines

(MENAFN- Live Mint) The New Delhi Railway Station stampede case reached the Supreme Court as a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed at India's apex law body on Monday, February 17, seeking to consult experts and come up with guidelines to prevent such mishaps , reported the news portal LiveLaw.

A PIL is a petition which is filed under a court with the aim of protecting the rights of the public.

This move comes after at least 18 people lost their lives, and many were injured at the New Delhi Railway Station stampede on the night of February 15, 2025.

According to the news portal's report, the petitioner is Advocate Vishal Tiwari, who asked for directions and guidelines for the Union and States to follow the report made by the NDMA (National Disaster Management Authority) to manage crowds at events and mass gatherings.

The petitioner also sought for Supreme Court direction to the Indian Railways to take measures to ensure the safety of the passengers at the railway stations across the nation.

Widening corridors, constructing broader overbridges and platforms, ensuring easy access to platforms through ramps and escalators, during peak hours, are some of the measures which can be implemented to ensure the safety of the people travelling through Indian Railways, according to the report.

“These recurring tragedies highlight the urgent need for enhanced crowd management and safety measures at significant transport hubs such as New Delhi Railway Station,” said the petitioner, quoted in the news report.

Earlier, the same petitioner filed a petition in the Supreme Court for the stampede at the MahaKumbh Mela, but the apex court refused to entertain the petition and asked the petitioner to approach the High Court, as per the report.
