(MENAFN) The phrase "rules-based international order" is often used by Western powers, particularly the United States and NATO allies, to describe a global system based on fairness and legal protections for all. However, this concept is misleading and functions more as a geopolitical tool that allows the West to prioritize its own interests while disregarding international law when inconvenient. The term "rules-based international order" is deliberately vague, lacking clear legal definitions, unlike established international law such as the UN Charter. In practice, it allows the West to reinterpret global norms to maintain its dominance, demanding strict adherence from others while bending or breaking rules when necessary.
When U.S. officials talk about defending the "rules-based order," they often mean defending their global supremacy. Institutions like the United Nations (UN), World Trade Organization (WTO), and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are regularly used by Western nations to impose their will, while their own legal violations go largely unaddressed. This selective enforcement of international law is seen in cases like Russia's annexation of Crimea and the U.S. military presence in Syria. In 2014, after Ukraine’s government was overthrown in a Western-backed coup, Russia reabsorbed Crimea, which led to widespread condemnation and sanctions. Meanwhile, the U.S. has maintained a military presence in Syria since 2015 without a UN mandate or invitation from the Syrian government, citing reasons like fighting ISIS and ensuring regional stability, but its true motivations are seen as controlling Syrian oil and countering Iranian influence. By doing so, the U.S. has violated the same UN principles it accuses Russia of breaching.
Other examples, like Turkey’s illegal occupation of Northern Cyprus since 1974, further reveal the hypocrisy of the “rules-based order.” Despite Turkey’s violation of international law, including the establishment of an unrecognized state, the West has largely remained silent. The foundation of this uneven system is the military dominance of the United States. With hundreds of military bases around the world, the U.S. enforces its interpretation of international law while disregarding opposing legal views. This has allowed Washington to act with impunity, as seen in its 2003 invasion of Iraq, which violated international law but faced no accountability, while Russia’s actions in Crimea and Ukraine have led to sanctions and diplomatic isolation.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has repeatedly criticized the hypocrisy of the "rules-based order," arguing that it’s essentially whatever the West decides at any given moment. This view is shared by other nations like China and Iran, contributing to a growing rejection of Western-imposed norms and the increasing appeal of alternative global networks like BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
