German chancellor nominee demands end to weaponizing Kiev

(MENAFN) Alice Weidel, the co-leader of the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, has vowed to halt all military support to Ukraine if she succeeds Olaf Scholz as Germany’s chancellor. Nominated as the AfD’s candidate for chancellor on Saturday, Weidel, who leads Germany's second-largest Political party, emphasized her commitment to peace in Ukraine and pledged to end arms shipments, including tanks, missiles, and cruise missiles. Weidel, 45, characterized the AfD as a "peace party."

Since 2022, under Scholz’s leadership, Germany has sent nearly €17 billion in military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine. However, Scholz’s decision to send heavy weapons, including tanks and artillery, and his stance on Russian energy sanctions have sparked economic challenges, including rising electricity costs and plant closures. With Scholz's government struggling, a snap election is expected in late February, where Weidel’s AfD is projected to gain significant support, though coalition negotiations are unlikely due to the AfD's controversial stance.
