Amman, July 29 (Petra) – The Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities announced the launch of the second round of the Accessible Buildings Award for Persons with Disabilities for 2024 on Monday.
In a statement, the council detailed that this annual award recognizes the most accessible buildings in the Kingdom, focusing on features such as ramps, elevators, bathrooms, entrance and exit widths, and ground indicators.
It evaluates the accessibility of information within these facilities, including websites, data, and information available in accessible formats such as Braille, large letters, and optimized color schemes. The award also considers the provision of Braille signs, sign language communication, and assistive technology as needed.
The Council emphasized that the award aims to promote the full exercise of rights and freedoms by persons with disabilities, ensuring unimpeded access to government and private buildings and facilities, as well as the services they provide. It also highlights the importance of an obstacle-free work environment, free from physical and behavioral barriers.
This year's award includes three levels gold, silver, and bronze based on the standards and criteria set by the Council and aligned with the updated Building Requirements Code for Persons with Disabilities issued in 2018 and best practices.
An advanced level (gold, silver, and bronze) has been introduced for buildings that meet the employment standards for persons with disabilities. This addition reflects the importance of the right to work as a cornerstone of social and economic integration, ensuring that accessible environments not only allow access but also facilitate independent and equitable employment opportunities for persons with disabilities.
Institutions can select their level of participation, either by submitting buildings prepared to meet the award's three levels or those that also fulfill employment requirements to qualify for the advanced levels.
