French bishops strongly condemn Olympic LGBTQ themed mockery of Christianity

(MENAFN) The Bishops’ Conference of France has issued a strong condemnation against the organizers of the Olympic Games following an opening ceremony in Paris that featured a controversial LGBTQ-themed interpretation of the Last Supper. The ceremony, held on Friday night, concluded with a scene depicting drag queens, homosexuals, and transsexuals posing at a table resembling Leonardo Da Vinci’s iconic painting of Jesus Christ and his apostles. The performance included the appearance of a mostly naked man representing Dionysus, the Greek god of wine, emerging from a giant serving dish.

In response to the ceremony, which was intended to reflect the organizers’ “values and principles,” the Bishops’ Conference expressed deep regret over what it described as the mockery and ridicule of Christianity. In a statement issued on Saturday, the Conference lamented the portrayal that offended many Christians worldwide and thanked members of other religious communities who showed solidarity.

The event drew widespread criticism from Christians and conservatives globally. Bishop Robert Barron of Minnesota condemned it as a “gross mockery of the Last Supper,” while Matteo Salvini, Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister, characterized the opening of the Olympics as a disrespectful start that insulted billions of Christians. Tech mogul Elon Musk and entrepreneur Dr. Eli David also voiced their dismay, with Musk describing the spectacle as “extremely disrespectful” and David, despite being Jewish, expressing outrage over what he termed an “outrageous insult to Jesus and Christianity.
