Jaishankar, Chinese FM Wang Yi Agree To Give 'Strong Guidance' To Finish Disengagement: 'Respect LAC And...'

(MENAFN- Live Mint) China and India have agreed to work with“urgency” in order to address an ongoing border dispute following a meeting between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on Thursday. The two officials also agreed to give strong guidance in order to complete the disengagement process.

A statement shared by the Ministry of External Affairs indicates that Jaishankar also stressed the need for China to“ensure full respect for the Line of Actual Control and past agreements”.

“Both Ministers agreed on the need to work with purpose and urgency to achieve complete disengagement at the earliest. The two countries have also agreed to hold another round of military and diplomatic talks,” the statement added.

The two countries have been uneasy neighbours for decades after a bloody border war in 1962. Ties between India and China have however become increasingly strained since a military clash in July 2020 left at least 20 Indian soldiers and several of their Chinese counterparts dead. Fighter jets, tanks and thousands of soldiers have been deployed along the Ladakh border since the skirmish. Meanwhile India has also discouraged Chinese investments as a retaliatory move.

“Continued our ongoing discussions about our bilateral relationship. The state of the border will necessarily be reflected on the state of our ties. It is in our mutual interest to stabilize our ties. We should approach the immediate issues with a sense of purpose and urgency,” the External Affairs Minister wrote on X.

The meeting came on the sidelines of the Southeast Asian bloc ASEAN summit in Laos - just three weeks after their last meeting in Kazakhstan. After the previous interaction Wang had said that the two countries must handle and control the situation in the border areas while resuming normal exchanges in other areas.
