Army excludes discussions in war-torn African nation

(MENAFN) The Sudanese armed forces (SAF) have firmly rejected any possibility of negotiating with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to resolve the ongoing civil war in Sudan. Lieutenant General Yasser al-Atta, assistant commander-in-chief of the SAF, made this declaration on Tuesday during a promotion ceremony for the Engineering Corps in Omdurman. Al-Atta emphasized that there would be no discussions or ceasefires, regardless of how long the conflict endures.

The conflict between the SAF and the RSF began in mid-April 2023 and has led to severe humanitarian consequences, with approximately 10 million people displaced internally and around 17,000 fatalities reported. Al-Atta argued that engaging in negotiations with the RSF would only serve to extend the conflict and worsen the political, military, and security situation in Sudan. He stated that the SAF is committed to the will of the Sudanese people, who, according to him, are keen on the complete dissolution of the RSF.

Previously, indirect United Nations-sponsored talks took place on July 11 in Switzerland, focusing on the worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan. The discussions in Geneva aimed at exploring potential local ceasefires to facilitate humanitarian aid and protect civilians. Additionally, talks held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, late last year, sponsored by the United States and Saudi Arabia, ended without a resolution. More recently, an Egyptian-organized conference in Cairo on July 6 sought to bring together Sudanese political forces, resulting in the formation of a committee tasked with pursuing ongoing discussions and striving for lasting peace.
