South African FM claims that Ukraine war cannot be resolved without Russia

(MENAFN) South African Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, has emphasized that resolving the Ukraine conflict requires the active involvement of Russia. Speaking in London, Lamola highlighted that any successful peace initiative must engage both Russia and Ukraine to achieve a lasting resolution. He noted that African leaders are prepared to revisit both Moscow and Kiev to advance a negotiated settlement.

During his visit to the United Kingdom, Lamola met with United Kingdom Foreign Secretary David Lammy to discuss various global issues, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Lamola acknowledged a divergence in perspectives between the United Kingdom and South Africa on how to address the crisis but stressed the importance of continued dialogue between the two nations.

In a recent statement, Russian President Vladimir Putin reaffirmed Moscow's commitment to meaningful discussions aimed at resolving the Ukraine conflict diplomatically, according to a Kremlin announcement. Last June, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa led an African Peace Initiative delegation to both Russia and Ukraine, seeking to secure ceasefire agreements. While Russia showed interest in a ten-point plan proposed by the mission, Ukraine has maintained that peace can only be achieved through Russia’s complete withdrawal from territories claimed by Ukraine.
