Nursing home shooting in Croatia leaves over 5 dead


(MENAFN) On Monday, a gunman carried out a deadly attack at a nursing home in Daruvar, Croatia, resulting in the deaths of at least five people. The incident occurred around 10:10 AM local time (0810 GMT) and involved an unidentified individual who entered the facility and began shooting. Several others were also wounded during the attack.

State broadcaster HRT reported that the assailant, who has since been taken into police custody, targeted the nursing home, which is located approximately 130 kilometers east of the capital, Zagreb. The Croatian police confirmed the use of a firearm in the incident and are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic has called for a comprehensive investigation into the shooting, expressing his shock and condemnation of the violence. On social media, he described the event as deeply troubling, stating, "We are appalled by the murder of five people at the home for elderly in Daruvar."

Emergency services were quick to respond, with Nenad Mrzlecki, head of a regional emergency care facility, reporting that medical teams discovered four deceased individuals at the scene and transported four others to local hospitals. Mrzlecki did not specify details about the fifth victim but emphasized that the immediate priority was to provide medical assistance to all those affected.

According to Croatian newspaper Jutarnji list, the alleged shooter has been identified as a retired military police officer. Reports suggest that he targeted his mother among other residents and staff at the facility.
