Job interviews incline into disorder after 25,000 show up

(MENAFN) In a dramatic turn of events, Mumbai, India's financial hub, became the epicenter of chaotic scenes as an astounding 25,000 individuals converged for interviews aimed at filling just 600 vacancies at the local airport. Reports from Indian media highlighted the overwhelming turnout for positions such as 'handyman' and 'utility agent', underscoring the intense competition and economic pressures driving the surge.

According to accounts, the recruitment drive organized by Air India Airport Services swiftly escalated into scenes of disorder, prompting organizers to urgently manage the overflow to prevent dangerous overcrowding. Videos capturing the sprawling queues and bustling activity at the venue swiftly went viral, encapsulating the scale of the unprecedented event.

George Abram, the general secretary of the Aviation Industry Employees Guild, voiced concern over what he described as severe mismanagement, noting that more than 50,000 hopefuls had reportedly descended upon the venue. He emphasized the logistical challenges, including the need for police intervention to maintain order amidst the sprawling 1-kilometer-long queue.

The surge in applicants was attributed partly to the broad eligibility criteria, which allowed individuals who had completed the 10th grade to apply. Despite this, even candidates with advanced degrees were among those vying for opportunities, with some traveling vast distances for a chance at employment. One Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) student expressed frustration over the pervasive unemployment and called on the government to step up efforts in generating more job opportunities.

The unprecedented turnout underscores deeper socioeconomic challenges facing India, where high unemployment rates and aspirations for stable employment continue to drive individuals to compete fiercely for even entry-level positions in critical sectors like aviation.
