New York, July 17 (Petra) -- United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres Wednesday warned that the humanitarian support system in Gaza is close to complete collapse amid an ongoing Israeli war.
In a speech delivered on his behalf by his chief of staff, Courtenay Rattray, before a Security Council meeting headed by Russia, Guterres noted that nearly half a million people in Gaza face catastrophic levels of acute food insecurity and the spread of infectious diseases amid severe challenges and deadly risks UN staff face.
He said the widespread entry of humanitarian aid and its delivery across Gaza is "essential" for the survival of civilians, adding, "It is long past time to provide a safe enabling environment for effective humanitarian operations in Gaza."
On illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, he urged stopping all Israeli settlement activities and holding perpetrators of violence accountable, adding that Israeli settlements are a "flagrant" violation of international law and an obstacle to peace.
