Southern Korea advances in development of laser defense system against drones

(MENAFN) South Korea is poised to commence production of a laser weapon designed specifically for intercepting enemy drones, with deployment expected later this year, announced the country's arms procurement agency on Thursday. The Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) disclosed that it had recently finalized a contract valued at approximately 100 billion won (USUSD72 million) with Hanwha Aerospace, a leading South Korean defense firm, to manufacture this advanced weapons system.

The laser weapon is engineered to counter unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and multi-rotor helicopters within short ranges. The system operates by emitting fiber-optic laser beams directed at targets, offering a high level of precision and effectiveness. Notably, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration highlighted that the operational cost per firing is minimal, estimated at around 2,000 won, as the weapon relies solely on electricity and emits no audible sound, making its operation discreet.

Describing the potential strategic impact of the laser defense system, DAPA officials underscored its capability to revolutionize modern warfare tactics, particularly in addressing threats posed by ballistic missiles and aircraft. They emphasized that the laser's invisibility to the naked eye further enhances its tactical advantage, positioning it as a pivotal technology for future defense strategies.

The initiative reflects South Korea's ongoing efforts to bolster its national defense capabilities through the integration of cutting-edge technologies. As tensions persist globally, particularly in regions with heightened military activities, the development of such advanced defense systems underscores South Korea's commitment to maintaining robust defense preparedness and fostering technological innovation in defense solutions.
