Trump declares he encourages US to ‘own’ Gaza

(MENAFN) US President Donald trump has proposed that the United States take control of the Gaza Strip, describing the region as a “demolition site” in need of redevelopment. In a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump outlined a plan to clear unexploded ordnance, rebuild infrastructure, and create housing and jobs. He suggested that the US could deploy troops to Gaza if necessary, envisioning long-term US ownership to bring stability to the region, and transforming Gaza into the “Riviera of the Middle East.”

A key element of the proposal involves relocating Gaza’s two million Palestinian residents to neighboring countries like Egypt and Jordan. Trump claimed regional leaders supported this idea, though he did not provide specifics on its execution.

Netanyahu praised Trump’s “outside the box” thinking, expressing optimism that it could change history. However, the proposal has drawn criticism from human rights organizations, which condemned the plan as ethnic cleansing and a violation of international law. Hamas officials rejected it, and both Egypt and Jordan have previously opposed similar resettlement plans due to concerns over regional stability and Palestinian rights.
