Belgium's King assigns Bart De Wever to form federal government

(MENAFN) On Wednesday, Belgium's King Philippe appointed Bart De Wever, the president of the New Flemish Alliance (N-VA), to form the federal government. De Wever, after being received at the Royal Palace in the morning, submitted his final report as "preformateur" to the King. He has now accepted the mission as "formateur" and will undertake negotiations with various Political parties to establish a new federal government, with a deadline to report back to the King by July 24.

During his role as preformateur, De Wever secured the endorsement of four political parties committed to entering coalition negotiations. These parties include the Mouvement Reformateur (MR) and Les Engagés on the French-speaking side, and the CD&V and Vooruit representing Dutch-speaking interests. Together with the N-VA, these five parties form the foundation of the prospective federal government, pending successful negotiation outcomes led by De Wever.

The upcoming negotiations are set to address a wide range of critical issues, including socio-economic recovery strategies, investments in healthcare, measures to enhance the purchasing power of low-income groups, and policies aimed at activating jobseekers. These discussions will shape the agenda and priorities of the coalition government, reflecting the diverse interests and concerns across Belgium's linguistic and regional divides.

As Belgium navigates through the process of government formation under De Wever's leadership, the outcome of these negotiations will be pivotal in determining the direction of the country's governance and policy initiatives in the coming years.
