Scholz declares Germany`s refusal to support Ukraine ceasefire

(MENAFN) German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has unequivocally stated that Germany will not endorse any ceasefire proposal that he perceives as tantamount to Ukraine's capitulation to Russia. Addressing questions from members of the Bundestag, Scholz emphasized Berlin's stance on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, particularly regarding the terms set forth by Russian President Vladimir Putin for peace negotiations.

Scholz's remarks came in response to a query from Left lawmaker Gesine Loetzsch during a session at the Bundestag, where discussions centered on Germany's role and potential involvement in facilitating a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia. The chancellor categorically rejected any ceasefire agreement that requires Ukraine to concede defeat, labeling Putin's conditions as cynical and aimed at prolonging the conflict rather than resolving it.

According to Scholz, Putin's demands for peace negotiations include Ukraine's withdrawal of troops from territories that have expressed a desire to join Russia, renunciation of NATO aspirations, and conditions such as the lifting of Western sanctions and what he termed as the "demilitarization and denazification" of the Ukrainian government.

The German leader's statement underscores a firm stance against endorsing proposals that he believes undermine Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Scholz condemned what he characterized as Putin's strategy of using peace talks as a pretext to continue military actions, asserting that Germany and its European allies will not allow such maneuvers to succeed.

The context of Scholz's comments also referenced recent diplomatic efforts, including Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's proposal for a swift ceasefire during his visit to Kiev, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reportedly did not favor. The divergent positions among European leaders reflect ongoing debates and diplomatic challenges in addressing the complex dynamics of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
