Tehran, Moscow ink MOU to facilitate transfer of Russian gas to Iran

(MENAFN) On Thursday, a significant memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed between Tehran and Moscow to facilitate the transfer of Russian gas to Iran, as reported by a news agency. This MOU marks a crucial step toward transforming Iran into a regional gas hub, fulfilling the vision set forth by the late President Ebrahim Raisi.

In the concluding days of Iran's 13th government, the Ministry of Oil successfully secured this MOU with Russia, aiming to establish Iran as the central gas hub in the region. This strategic move aligns with the late president's promise and reinforces Iran's ambition to enhance its position in the global energy market.

Additionally, another MOU was signed in Tehran on the same day between the special representative of the Russian Federation and Iran's oil minister. This agreement is designed to bolster and expand cooperation between the two countries in the gas sector, specifically focusing on the export of Russian gas to Iran.

Iran's Acting President Mohammad Mokhber highlighted the strategic importance of this MOU, emphasizing that the agreement for the transfer of gas from Russia to Iran is of considerable significance for both nations and the broader region. Mokhber stressed that the firm determination of Tehran and Moscow to enhance their relations sends a powerful message to the world. He noted that this initial step in gas cooperation between the two countries will pave the way for further agreements and contracts.

During a meeting with Alexey Miller, CEO of Gazprom and the special representative of the President of the Russian Federation, Mokhber reiterated the importance of the MOU for regional security and economic stability. He underscored the necessity of accelerating the completion of the north-south corridor and the Rasht-Bandar Abbas railway line, which will connect regional countries to this vital transportation route. This infrastructure development is seen as crucial for facilitating increased trade and cooperation within the region.
