Iran’s railway fleet grows with 558 new, renovated wagons, locomotives

(MENAFN) In a ceremony on Wednesday, the Iranian railway fleet received a significant boost with the addition of 558 new domestically-made or renovated wagons and locomotives, valued at 36.27 trillion rials (approximately USD72.54 million). This event was attended by high-ranking officials, including Miad Salehi, Head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways (RAI), as reported by the Transport Ministry's portal.

The new additions to the fleet consist of 516 freight wagons, 12 new locomotives, five renovated locomotives, eight new passenger wagons, and 17 renovated passenger wagons. All these units were manufactured and refurbished by local companies, highlighting the country's focus on self-reliance and domestic production.

The enhancement of the railway sector has been a central element of Iran's national development strategy. This commitment is evident in the continuous addition of new and refurbished locomotives and wagons to the national railway fleet in both the past and current Iranian calendar years. Last year alone, 1,660 wagons and locomotives were incorporated into the fleet across four stages.

Rail transport is prioritized for its numerous benefits, including lower fuel consumption, reduced pollution, and higher safety compared to other transportation systems, making its development both economically and environmentally advantageous.
