Orban claims Hungary wont consent to NATO war

(MENAFN) Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has voiced strong opposition to what he perceives as the United States' and Western allies' aggressive stance towards Russia in the ongoing Ukraine conflict. In a recent interview on Kossuth Radio, Orban criticized the Western approach, accusing the United States of pursuing a strategy aimed at defeating Russia, with Germany playing a secondary role in the scenario. He described this approach as futile and detrimental, leading to tragic consequences for Ukrainians and Russians caught in the conflict, while potentially escalating tensions further.

Orban emphasized Hungary's stance of resisting what he termed as a "war train" led by the US in Ukraine. He asserted that Hungary has taken steps to slow down this momentum, citing electoral successes in the recent European Parliament elections where his party gained ground, while some pro-Ukrainian factions faced setbacks.

The Hungarian leader highlighted assurances received from NATO leaders, including outgoing Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and anticipated successor Mark Rutte, that Hungary would not be compelled to participate in what he referred to as a United States-led military mission in Ukraine. Orban reiterated Hungary's commitment to refrain from contributing troops, weapons, or financial support to such efforts.

"We can apply the emergency brake. Hungary will not be part of this train, and we will disembark if necessary," Orban affirmed. He expressed hopes of influencing the direction of Western policies through Hungary's diplomatic efforts, aiming to prevent further escalation of the conflict.

Orban's comments come amidst heightened tensions over Western support for Ukraine, including recent decisions by some NATO members to allow Ukrainian forces to use Western-supplied weapons for strikes deep inside Russian territory. These developments have drawn strong reactions from Moscow, which views the conflict as a proxy war initiated by the United States and its allies. As geopolitical maneuvers continue, Orban's stance underscores Hungary's cautious approach to international military engagements and its efforts to assert independence in foreign policy decisions.
