Media reports Italy possibly to weaponize Kiev with long-range arms

(MENAFN) Italy is reportedly contemplating the transfer of Storm Shadow cruise missiles, also known as SCALP in their French variant, to Ukraine, signaling a potential significant shift in Rome's approach to the ongoing Ukraine conflict. According to sources within Italy's Defense Ministry cited by Il Fatto Quotidiano, these missiles, with a range of up to 560 kilometers, could enable Ukrainian forces to target locations deep within Russia, far beyond current front lines.

The proposed transfer is part of Italy's ninth arms package intended for Ukraine, set to be presented by Defense Minister Guido Crosetto to the parliamentary Committee for the Security of the Republic for approval before the end of the month. Alongside the Storm Shadow missiles, the package reportedly includes the SAMP/T surface-based air defense system, artillery, and Stinger surface-to-air missiles. The timing of the package's finalization ahead of the upcoming NATO summit in Washington, scheduled for July 9, underscores Italy's strategic considerations within the broader European security framework.

The potential transfer of these advanced weapons marks a departure from Italy's previous reluctance to allow Ukrainian use of weaponry for strikes deep into Russian territory. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has maintained strong support for Ukraine, yet Italy's constitutional constraints had previously constrained such actions. Defense Minister Crosetto and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani clarified last month that Italian-supplied weapons would not be authorized for use on Russian soil, reflecting legal and diplomatic considerations.

Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini recently cautioned that Italy would cease arms provision to Ukraine unless assurances were provided that its weapons would not be deployed for offensive actions against Russia. These developments underscore the delicate balance Italy faces in aligning its support for Ukraine with broader European security interests and international legal frameworks.

As Italy navigates these complex diplomatic and strategic considerations, the potential deployment of Storm Shadow missiles highlights evolving dynamics in European responses to the Ukraine conflict. The decision, pending parliamentary approval, could influence discussions at the upcoming NATO summit and shape Italy's role in addressing escalating tensions in Eastern Europe.
