US bans anti-virus software “Kaspersky”, citing concerns about relations with Moscow

(MENAFN) The United States announced on Thursday its decision to ban the Russian anti-virus program Kaspersky within its borders, as well as preventing Americans worldwide from using it. The move comes amid criticism of the cybersecurity firm's perceived proximity to Moscow. The US Department of Commerce stated that Kaspersky would no longer be permitted to sell its software in the US or provide updates to existing software. This ban extends to Kaspersky Lab's subsidiaries, affiliates, and parent companies.

However, certain activities by Kaspersky will be allowed until September 29, providing customers with a transition period to find alternative solutions. Additionally, three entities associated with Kaspersky were added to Washington's blacklist for their alleged cooperation with Russian military and intelligence authorities to further the Russian government's cyber espionage objectives.

The US Department of Commerce clarified that individuals and entities continuing to use Kaspersky anti-virus software will not face sanctions. However, they will be cautioned about the cybersecurity risks associated with its usage. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo emphasized the concerns, stating, "Russia has repeatedly demonstrated its ability and intention to exploit Russian companies, such as Kaspersky Lab, to gather and exploit sensitive American information." This decision underscores the ongoing tensions between the US and Russia in the realm of cybersecurity and highlights Washington's efforts to protect sensitive data from potential exploitation by foreign entities.
