SHIBERGHAN (Pajhwok): Some people in northern Jawzjan province associated with silkworm rearing have asked the government and aid providing organizations to support them so that their business could further prosper.
According to the Agriculture Department women have been mostly involved in silkworm rearing in the province.
Maryam, 34, who reared silkworms from the past 10 years, told Pajhwok Afghan News this business helped her financially and she was happy.
She said:“It has been more than ten years that I have been engaged in breeding silkworms, every year with the arrival of spring I hope that it will be a good and suitable spring for breeding worms because this is how we earn our daily income, my two daughters help me.”
Maryam said she was very interested in this business and hoped that her business would improve.
She asked the Agriculture Department to provide more support to women through the arrangement of training and provision of tools needed in this profession.
Saera, another woman in Shiberghan was also busy rearing silkworms. She had been doing this work from the past eight years and was happy with it.
She said:“It is very difficult to raise a silkworm, first it is like an ant's cocoon, then its egg opens, we give it a sweet mulberry leaf that is soft so that it does not get sick, does not have heartache, does not die, we raise it for forty days than it close the cocoon.”
She said silkworms start in early spring when the leaves of the mulberry trees are open and grow about the size of a knuckle.
She also raised similar demand and asked government and aid providing organization to support women associated with rearing silk worms.
Besides women some men in Jawzjan also associated with silkworms business.
Asadullah, the resident of Shiberghan City, said this year would be more suitable for silkworms rearing because of huge amount of rain that fallen.
He said:“We also make a living in this way, and by the grace of God, we also have a good income. If our partner offices and the Department of Agriculture cooperate with us and support us, our work will be more prosperous.”
Irikin, 50, a resident of Shiberghan City associated with carpet business, said lately demand from foreign countries for silky carpets had increased.
He added:“Silky carpet is famous and this carpet shines like light after washing, that's why its demand is high.”
Dr. Samiullah Hakimi, deputy head of the provincial Agriculture and Livestock Department, said:“The results of this year's silkworms businesses are good compared to the previous year because there was a drought for three consecutive years, but this year it rained a lot and the greenery is also good.”
He spoke about the increase in the interest of families in raising silkworms compared to previous years, saying that this work plays a significant role in improving the economic conditions of families.
He added:“Last year, we distributed silkworm boxes to 53 families and this year to 110 families, each box contains twelve grams.”
He said mostly women had been associated with silkworm rearing business and there was a small percentage of men also involved in this business.
Currently, one kilogram of silkworm cocoon is sold in the market for about 1000 Afghanis.
