Ministry Backs Startups To Foster Technical Textiles Innovation

New Delhi, Jun 14 (KNN) The Ministry of Textiles is providing crucial support to startups working on cutting-edge technical textiles, in a move aimed at boosting innovation and sustainability in this transformative field.
This commitment was highlighted by Rachna Shah, Secretary of the Ministry of Textiles, as she chaired the 7th meeting of the Empowered Programme Committee (EPC) of the National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM) on Friday.
Through the GREAT (Grant for Research and Entrepreneurship across Aspiring Innovators in Technical Textiles) scheme, the NTTM is encouraging young innovators, scientists, technologists and startup ventures to translate their pioneering ideas into commercial technologies and products. The goal is to make India self-reliant in technical textiles.
At the meeting, the EPC approved seven startup proposals under GREAT, with the government providing a maximum funding support of Rs 50 lakh per venture.
To date, eight startups focused on sustainability, composites, high-performance textiles, meditech and smart textiles have received the green light – driving significant advancements in these crucial areas.
Some key startups endorsed include those developing braided composites for military applications, integrated IFF antenna, surgical simulation models made of composites for doctor training, and nanofibre-infused textiles for energy generation and sensing.
In another major boost, the EPC approved a grant of approximately Rs 6.4 crore to IIT Guwahati to introduce new technical textiles courses and upgrade laboratory infrastructure in its Civil Engineering Department. This support comes under NTTM guidelines for enabling academic institutes.
By enhancing capabilities in areas like geotextiles, IIT Guwahati will be better positioned to leverage its expertise for the North East's development through consultancy and support, given the region's unique geographical and environmental conditions.
The government's multi-pronged measures demonstrate its commitment to nurturing an ecosystem conducive for path-breaking technical textiles research and entrepreneurship to thrive in India.
